1. (Male) GWIN .

Notes: Miscellaneous Gwin records from Chalkley:

vol 2, p. 132 - in lawsuit over Snowden/Snodden family inheritance, says Mary Snowdon/Snoddon married James Quinn before 20 Nov 1805 and after 19 Jan 1793.

(Male) married.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 2 M    i. Robert GWIN was born about 1720 in Wales or Orange Co, Virginia and died after May 1785 in Augusta Co, Virginia.1

3 M    ii. John GWIN was born before 1717.

Notes: NO PROOF THAT JOHN AND ROBERT ARE BROTHERS; I'M JUST FILING THEM AS SUCH FOR CONVENIENCE.

This establishes that there was an adult John Gwinn buying land in the Borden Grant in Augusta co in 1738-39.
MAY, 1753.
Bell's executor vs. Benjamin Borden.--Copy of bond of Benjamin Borden to Alexander Breckinridge, George, James, Robert and Adam Breckinridge, John Moore, Quantin Moore, George Henderson, James Bell, Thomas Armstrong, John Mulholan, John Bell, John Walters, William McCanless, Robert Poage, Seth Poage, Daniel McAneer, JOHN GWINN. Condition, that if Benjamin Borden will give each 100 acres where they have already chosen and entered with John McDowell, and shall build and improve on said 100 acres by 1st April next. Witnessed by John McDowell. Dated 21st February, 1738-9. [Chalkley, vol 1, p.307]

20 Aug 1771 - Daniel Love to John Quin (Guin), 2 tracts of land - first, 53 acres on Fork of Cook's Creek patented to Daniel Love 20 July 1768, corner his other land & Cravens' line; second, 255 acres part of 280 acres patented to Daniel 16 Aug 1746, adj. the 53 acres, corner Joseph Dicktum, corner John Cravens. Delivered to John Guin (Gwin) Marc 1776.
-- note that Patrick Guin owned land on Cooks Ck also, so I suspect that John & Patrick are related, probably brothers

4 M    iii. William GWIN died about Mar 1772 in Augusta Co, Virginia.2

Notes: NO PROOF THAT WILLIAM IS A BROTHER OF ROBERT, BUT THAT SEEMS MOST LIKELY UNLESS HE IS A SON WHO DIED IN HIS 30s OR A NEPHEW. FILED HERE FOR CONVENIENCE.

Since the Chalkley records deal with him as an adult, he must have been born in the 1740s or earlier.

1742 - Will Quinn listed in Capt. John Buchanan's company in the muster rolls of Augusta co. [Chalkley vol 2 p. 508]

1769: William Guin, in gaol for debt, 20 days. [Chalkley vol 1, p.490; filed with 1765/66 records, which makes me wonder if the date is right]

11th Sept.,1769. Will Gwynn to John Cawley and Daniel Kidd, of Staunton, £6.5.6, 1 horse and several cows. Test: M. Bowyer, Christopher Graham. Delivered: Grantee, 1770. [Chalkley vol 3, p.492]

MARCH 24, 1772. (361) William Gwinn's death abates suit. [Chalkley vol 1, p.167]

page 488-19th of March, 1772 John Carlyle's bond (with John McCreery, John Graham) to administrator of William Gwynn. [Chalkley vol 3, p.122]

page 512-20th of May,1772. William Gwynn's appraisement (by Robert Carlile, John Carlile, Loftiss Pulland ) recorded-one nursery of peach trees. [Chalkley vol 3, p.124]

Cleek says Robert had a brother William & quotes Chalkley vol 3 as evidence.

This appears to be a different William:
William Gwin, Bath County, deposes, 25th August, 1792, that David [Gwin] bears a good character. They have lived neighbors 24 years. [Chalkley vol 2, p.16, SEP 1793 JUDGEMENTS (G-Z)
--so this William was born before 1768 (24 yrs before 1792) and may have even been an adult by 1768, and apparently is not the same William who died in 1772. Of course this could be a mis-transcription of Willam Givens, who is listed in Bath co tax lists in 1791-1793, usually on or near the same day as David Gwin.

2. Robert GWIN ((Male)1) was born about 1720 in Wales or Orange Co, Virginia and died after May 1785 in Augusta Co, Virginia.1

Notes: Settled on Calfpasture River about 1744, came from North Carolina. Bought 544 acres on both sides of river from James Patton and John Lewis. Had 9 kids. 3rd son was David. [Hugh S. Gwin, in Bath Bicentennial book]
-- NOTE that no primary evidence has been brought forward to show that he settled in NC or that he came from Wales.

Thomas died in 1750 intestate, leaving a widow and ____ children, of whom orator is eldest. James Neal's orphans, are desirous that there should be an order to bind
Samuel Neal to Lanty Graham, and James to Robert Gewn. October, 1778.
(Signed) Robert Gwinn, William Forknor. [Chalkley vol 1, p.533]
--this could be Robert Sr or Jr. Would be interesting to know how they were uncles to James's Neal's orphans; did James Neal marry a Gwin sister?

Feb 15, 1780: Following allowed certificates for land for military services: John Kinkead, Thomas Hicklin, Robert Gwin, Lofftus Pullin, William Black, Patrick Miller, William Jackson, in Capt. Wm. Preston's Company of Rangers, 1758. [Chalkley vol 1, p.212, AUGUSTA COUNTY COURT RECORDS, ORDER BOOK No. XVII.]

There is a deed from Robert & Jane to James Fulton on 15 June 1784; need to get this deed. Could be Robert Jr...

17 May 1785: Joseph Gwin bought 220 acres on the Calfpasture river in Augusta co from his father Robert Sr. (DB 24 P 83, copy from Mike Gwinn)

Noted events in his life were:

• Military: 1758, Capt. William Preston's Company of Rangers, Virginia.

Robert married Jean\Jane KINCAID est 1730-1740. Jean\Jane was born est 1720-1724 in (probably) Albemarle Co, Virginia.

Marriage Notes: No proof of this marriage has been found that I've seen, but it's accepted by most researchers and will serve here as a placeholder until we find proof, if any is to be found.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 5 M    i. Joseph GWIN was born est 1740 in (probably) Augusta Co, Virginia and died from Sep 1817 to Oct 1817 in Bath Co, Virginia 3 about age 77.

+ 6 M    ii. Robert GWIN was born before 1745 in (probably) Augusta Co, Virginia and died abt 1818 (?) in Woodford Co, Kentucky (?).

+ 7 M    iii. David GWIN was born in 1742 in (probably) Augusta Co, Virginia 4 and died in 1822 in Clover Creek, Highland Co, Virginia at age 80.

8 M    iv. Thomas GWIN was born from 1740 to 1760 in (probably) Augusta Co, Virginia.

Birth Notes: Most likely born in the 1740-1760 time period when siblings were born, but if so, he married late (in 1800), unless that marriage is for another, younger Thomas.

Notes: Married April 8, 1800 Elizabeth Lockridge dau. of Samuel & Elizabeth Lockridge, migrated to KY. [Cleek p.96]
--I am pretty sure Cleek is wrong and Robert & Jean never had a son named Thomas. Thomas who married Betsy Lockridge appears to be the son of Joseph Gwin & Mary Jane Kincaid, based on land records and wills (details in Joseph's descendants' entries). It also appears that Thomas lived and died in Augusta co and I have seen no evidence that he ever went to KY, although several of his children appear to have moved west to Wood Co VA (now WV). Or else Robert & Jean had a son Thomas who went to KY, but he's not the one who md. Betsy Lockridge and I've found no marriage in Augusta for him.

9 M    v. Simon GWIN was born from 1740 to 1760 in (probably) Augusta Co, Virginia.

Notes: Married Elizabeth Lockridge Gay, dau. of Andrew Lockridge and Jean Graham and widow of Robert Gay. [Cleek p.96]

10 M    vi. James GWIN was born from 1740 to 1760 in (probably) Augusta Co, Virginia.

Notes: Married Marca Estill and settled in Greenbrier co in 1770. [Cleek, p.101]
See Beckie Rawdon's database for more info on James's descendants..

11 M    vii. Samuel GWIN was born from 1740 to 1755 in (probably) Augusta Co, Virginia and died between Jun 1833 and Apr 1839 in Monroe Co, Virginia about age 92.

Notes: See Beckie Rawdon's database for more on this family. This provides only the barest of details, mostly for me to keep the kids with the same names as other branches straight.

Apparently there is evidence for his marriage to Elizabeth Lockridge Graham, but not for a marriage to Elizabeth Speece; however, there is evidence in his pension application that he had 2 children by a first wife.

From Morton's History of Highland Co:
..... 2 Samuel Gwin
....... +Elizabeth Speece

From G.W. Cleek's Early Western Augusta Pioneers:
Samuel Gwin, son of Robert Gwin and Jean/Jane Kincaid, married Elizabeth (Lockridge) Graham, dau. of James Lockridge and Isabella Kincaid (a sister of Jean/Jane) and the widow of Robert Graham, whom she md. June 24, 1763. In 1776 they settled on Muddy Ck, now in Summers Co, WV. Samuel, although living in a frontier community, divided $12,000 in specie among his sons before his death. [History of Monroe Co, WV, by Oren Morton, p.348-349]

Children of Samuel & Elizabeth are:
Samuel Jr m. 1803 Elizabeth Taylor
Moses m. Mary Sargent
Andrew m. Mary Newsome
John m. Sarah George, dau. of Thomas
Ephraim m. Rachel Keller, dau. of Conrad
Ruth m. 1803 James Jarrett son of James. [History of Greenbrier Co; Cole]
Elizabeth m. Robert Newsome
Ivy m. Thomas Busby

JUNE 20, 1775.
(74) Andrew Lockridge, security for Elizabeth, widow of Robert Graham (now married to Samuel Guinn), prays counter security. [Chalkley, vol 1, p.185]
(78) Andrew Lockridge appointed guardian of Sarah and Jane Graham, orphans of Robert Graham.

Vincent vs. Nickle--O. S. 195; N. S. 69--Bill, 1812. In 1774 Joseph Vincent bought from Mathew Moss a settlement right in Greenbrier, near Swope's Nobs and Greenbrier River. Orator then lived in Shenandoah and was engaged in military service in Revolution and did not remove to Greenbrier until after the war. In 1780 the Commissioners met at the Savannah, where Lewisburgh stands, and in orator's absence Samuel Gwynn got a certificate in right of settlement. [Chalkley vol 2, p.160]

Kevin Robang <KRobang@aol.com> says Elizabeth Speece was the mother of Moses and Samuel Jr, and Elizabeth Lockridge was the mother of 7 others. His line is through son John.

Samuel's will, per Larry Shuck's Abstracts of Greenbrier wills, per email:
Will book no. 2, pages 94-95 dated june 4 1833 probated april court 1839.

Brothers of Samuel Gwinn are Moses, Andrew, John and Ephraim. Grandsons,
Samuel, son of brother Samuel; Samuel son of brother Moses; Samuel son of
brother Andrew; Samuel son of brother John; Samuel son of brother Ephraim;
Samuel, son of daughter, Ruth Garret.

NOTE: The following people, while listed in the Jesse Blaine Gwinn book & Morton county history as children of Samuel, are NOT. They are grandchildren of Samuel's brother James Gwinn & Nancy (possibly Carlisle) :
Jane m. David Withrow
Alexander m. Mary Givens
Salathiel m. Margaret Black dau. of Samuel and a sister-in-law to Wm. Feamster
Robert m. Nancy Ellison
Thompson m. 1841 Rachel Harra
Margaret m. Nathan Viney
James m. Jane Payne
Mary E. m. 1845 William C. Riner, b. 1820, son of Simeon Riner & Mary Thompson

10/5/00 Beckie Rawdon wrote: Alexander married Mary "Polly" Gwinn, Samuel Jr's daughter, James married Jane Pine. I descend from Thompson Gwinn.

Noted events in his life were:

• Immigrated to: 1776, Muddy Creek, Greenbrier Co, Virginia (now Summers Co, West Virginia). 7

12 F    viii. Agnes GWIN was born from 1740 to 1747 in (probably) Augusta Co, Virginia.

Notes: Married William Lockridge. [Cleek p.96]

David Stewart. Delivered: Robert Steel, 15th March, 1813, by order of
John Wier.

13 F    ix. Nell GWIN was born from 1740 to 1760 in (probably) Augusta Co, Virginia.

Notes: [Cleek p.96] says she was a dau. of Robert. However, the dates don't make sense for this - she's more of an age to be his sister.

Katrin Queen, 10th December, 1746, examined before justices charged with stealing a silver plate belonging to David Kinked and Winefer Kinked, his wife. Witnesses summoned to testify to character of Nell Guin. To be summoned: Margaret Gay, Patrick McDonald and Mary, his wife, and Elizabeth Thompson. Bond by John Tillery, of Albemarle County, bricklayer. David Kinked, of said county, joyner, and William Wright, of Augusta, farmer. John Tillery. [Chalkley vol 1, p.431]
--If Robert Gwin did marry Jean Kincaid, and Nell is his daughter, then David & Winnefred Kinkead may be Nell's grandparents. But if Nell is involved in a trial in 1746, doesn't that means she's an adult, i.e. born before 1725 or so? Then she could not be Robert's daughter after all. Note Katrin/Catherine Queen has an extensive history of petty crime in Chalkley and was finally ordered to leave the county. I still wonder if Queen is a corruption of Guinn...

5. Joseph GWIN (Robert2, (Male)1) was born est 1740 in (probably) Augusta Co, Virginia and died from Sep 1817 to Oct 1817 in Bath Co, Virginia 3 about age 77.

Notes: First, the published flawed data:
From Morton's History of Highland Co (not complete nor entirely correct):
..... 2 Joseph Gwin d: 1817
.......... 3 John Gwin
............ +Pickens
.......... 3 Jehu Gwin
.......... 3 Moses Gwin b: 1797 d: 1867
............ +Kinkaid
................ 4 William B. Gwin
.................. +Rachel Gwin
.......... 3 Mary Gwin
............ +Robert Lockridge
.......... 3 William K. Gwin
.......... 3 Elizabeth Gwin
............ +Andrew Kincaid
.......... 3 Jane Gwin
............ +William Steuart

I have never seen evidence of Jehu's existence, nor primary evidence that John's wife was a Pickens. Several children are missing from this list.

"Early Western Augusta Pioneers" [more errors; p.96] says Joseph m. Mary Jane Kincaid and lived in Highland and Bath Cos. He served as 1st Lieut. in Capt. Hicklin's Co in the Rev. War. Of Joseph's children (note Cleek didn't list them all, even though he quoted the will, which is odd), Cleek says:
John m. Mary (Pickens) Callahan, widow of Wm. Callahan
Elizabeth m. Andrew Kincaid, son of Thomas Kincaid and Isabell Kincaid Kincaid, on Jan 17, 1812 in BathCo .
Jane m. John Law on Dec. 15, 1795 in Bath Co
Virginia Gwin m. William Stuart

Chalkley, AUGUSTA COUNTY COURT RECORDS. ORDER BOOK No. XXIV., page 531
10th July, 1784 - Power of attorney by Elizabeth Kinkead to David Kinkead, of Fayette County, Virginia, to make a deed to Joseph Guin, of Augusta County.
-- Elizabeth may be the widow of Matthew Kinkead; see next few entries, although I don't know why her signature would be needed, as Matthew's will (Chalkley vol 3 p. 145) leaves land to David. David also had a sister named Elizabeth.

Aug 1784: Deed was delivered to David Kinkead for 230 acres on the great Calfpasture, "said Andrew's corner"; deed was made 20 Aug 1771 from John & Elizabeth Kinkead to their son Mathew Kinkead. Same to their son James Kinkead, corner to Andrew Kinkead's part of said tract. On same day, Mathew & Elizabeth Kinkead sold 174-1/2 acres (part of 334 acres in Beverley Manor on draft of Christian's Ck, corner Lewis's land) to his father John Kinkead. [Chalkley vol 3 p.513]

-- so does this mean Joseph Guin got 115 acres (David's share)?

17 May 1785: Joseph Gwin bought 220 acres on the Calfpasture river in Augusta co from his father Robert Sr. (DB 24 P 83, copy from Mike Gwinn; sold this land in 1813)

22 May 1794: Joseph Gwin patented 120 acres on the Calfpasture in Augusta co, adj. James Fulton[?], Thomas Kinkead. [Grants 31, p.150; LVA, Gwin, card 45; sold this land in 1813]

22 May 1794: Joseph Gwin, Augusta co, 83 acres on the Cowpasture River and on the mountain and adjoining his home tract. [Ron Gwinn's database of Lib. of VA grants]

19 August 1794, Augusta co: Joseph Gwin, 122 acres; See Kincaid, William and Gwin,Joseph [Ron Gwinn's database of Lib. of VA grants; this land was sold by his executors in 1851]

9 July 1796, Greenbrier co: Joseph Gwin, 75 acres On the waters of Kellies Creek a branch of Greenbrier River adjoining the land of Bailey Wood,John Dixon, etc. [Ron Gwinn's database of Lib. of VA grants]
-- not sure which Joseph this is; need to see if the Greenbrier Gwins had a Joseph. Probably not this one, since this land wasn't mentioned in his will. But since his son Robert had land in Greenbrier, it's interesting.

8 April 1801, Bath co: Joseph Gwin, 28 acres, in the double of the Calfpasture Mountain on a head spring of Benstons Draft. [Ron Gwinn's database of Lib. of VA grants; note this land was mentioned in his will

SEPTEMBER, 1802 (H to Z). Hughart vs. Adams--Road appeal from Augusta. 1809: Joseph Gwin patented 400 acres on the Calfpasture in Pendleton co, on the double of the Calfpasture Mountain on both sides of the County Line including the Wallow Hole. [Ron Gwinn's database of Lib. of VA grants; note this land was mentioned in his will]

This deed specifies that Joseph acquired the 220 acre parcel from "his father Robert Gwin". The 120 acre parcel is now adj. John Clayton, Thomas Kinkead, Gwin's old corner, Gwin's & Clayton's lines(see his entry) [Augusta deed bk 38, p.314]

25 Dec 1813: Joseph Gwin & Mary his wife of Bath co sold to Joseph Gwin, son of said Joseph & Mary, ...[I don't actually have this deed, just the ref from Mike Gwinn and it's in the grantor index] [Augusta deed bk 38, p.318]

1823 Pendleton land book (USGenWeb):
1223 U GWIN JOSEPH EST 400 COW PAST 35 S RES BATH
1224 U GWIN JOSEPH EST 28 COWPASTURE 35 S RES BATH
-- apparently Joseph's heirs sold his Cowpasture land or perhaps changed the title to their name, in 1823 - should look at this some time

Joseph married Mary Jane KINCAID before 1763 in (probably) Augusta Co, Virginia. Mary was born est 1740-1745 in Virginia and died between Sep 1817 and Apr 1822 in Bath Co, Virginia about age 76.

Notes: "Mary" from husband Joseph's will. "Mary Jane Kincaid" from Cleek, p.96.

Marriage date based on oldest known child's birthdate. Birthdate assumes she was at least 16 at marriage.

Husband's will left her 1/3 of all grain and hay raised on "the land that I have improved" on the Cowpasture, Negro woman Hannah (to dau. Elizabeth after wife's death), sheep, hogs, household & kitchen furniture, bay filly.

Wonder if she could be "Aunt Molly Gwinn" mentioned in the 8 Oct 1821 letter from Polly Clayton (in the Rev. John Craig)? At the time, Molly had a sore ankle "considered dangerous". We know from the Clayton letters that these Gwinns lived near the Claytons.

I *think* this is Mary's death...
1822 Apr 5: Inventory of Mary Gwin by David Kinkead, Charles L. Kinkead, and Hamilton Benson. Doesn't mention Negroes. [BCWI p.112]

1825 June: Settlement of estate of Mary Gwin. Moses Gwin, administrator. Debits/credits: Andrew Kincaid, Robert Gwin, Sally Stuart, John Kincaid, Dr. W.H. Montgomery, James A. Frazier, James Stuart, William Givins.
--I think it's this Mary because these are mostly family members, including granddaughter Sarah Stuart.

I suspect she had a brother or father named William (the one who patented land with her husband Joseph Gwin in 1794) and her mother may have been Elizabeth - see Joseph's entry.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 14 F    i. Virginia GWIN was born before 1763 and died before 1817.

+ 15 M    ii. Thomas GWIN was born from 1765 to 1777 in Augusta Co, Virginia 8 and died from Dec 1847 to Jan 1848 in Augusta Co, Virginia at age 81.

+ 16 F    iii. Jane GWIN was born before 1774 and died between 1795 and 1817.

+ 17 M    iv. James GWIN was born est 1765-1774 in Virginia and died from Feb 1835 to May 1835 in Augusta Co, Virginia about age 69.

18 F    v. Mary Elizabeth GWIN was born before 1783 and died before 1817.

Notes: Married Robert Lockridge, son of James Lockridge & Isabella Kincaid, on Jan 1, 1799 in Bath Co. Dau. Anne md. (as his 2nd wife) James Lockridge, son of Andrew Lockridge and Jean Graham. [Cleek p.96, 102]

Bath Co Marriages only has Robert Lockridge md. Mary Gwinn, dau. of David (stated in bond), on Jan 1, 1799. [BCM p.18] No similar marriage found in Augusta or any other VA county.

Not named in father's will in 1817, so probably dead. Or perhaps she doesn't exist, since the marriage data from Cleek appears to be for the wrong Mary.

Birthdate assumes she was at least 16 at marriage, assuming she DID marry in 1799.

+ 19 M    vi. Robert GWIN was born before 1784 in Virginia and died from Oct 1843 to Feb 1844 in Bath Co, Virginia.

+ 20 M    vii. John C. GWIN was born about 1786 in Bath Co, Virginia and died on 17 May 1861 in Highland Co, Virginia 10 about age 75.

+ 21 M    viii. Moses GWIN was born in Jan 1787 in Bath Co, Virginia 11 and died on 27 Apr 1867 in Highland Co, Virginia 12,13 at age 80.

+ 22 M    ix. William Kinkead GWIN was born about 1795 in Bath Co, Virginia and died on 29 Sep 1860 in Highland Co, Virginia 15 about age 65.

+ 23 F    x. Elizabeth GWIN was born before 1796 and died between 1835 and 1850 in Virginia.

+ 24 M    xi. Joseph GWIN was born est 1792-1795 in Augusta Co, Virginia and died from Nov to Dec 1848 in Augusta Co, Virginia.

6. Robert GWIN (Robert2, (Male)1) was born before 1745 in (probably) Augusta Co, Virginia and died abt 1818 (?) in Woodford Co, Kentucky (?).

Notes: Cleek says Robert married Sally Lockridge dau. of Samuel & Elizabeth Lockridge & migrated to KY. I think Cleek is wrong about this marriage. It can be proved through land records & wills that Robert son of Joseph married Sally Lockridge, so unless 2 Robert Gwins married 2 Sally Lockridges, this is suspicious. See Robert son of Joseph for details.

Beckie Rawdon reports: Robert b. abt 1746 married Mary Jane Lockridge and died in
1818 in Ky (no kids known).

Robert married Mary Jane LOCKRIDGE on 20 Feb 1765 in Augusta Co, Virginia. Mary was born before 1749.

Notes: According to Pat Hiser's list in the Gwinn GenForum, Mary Jane's parents were Samuel & Elizabeth Lockridge, but it can't be the same S & E who parented the other Lockridge-Gwinn brides because the timeframes don't make sense.

7. David GWIN (Robert2, (Male)1) was born in 1742 in (probably) Augusta Co, Virginia 4 and died in 1822 in Clover Creek, Highland Co, Virginia at age 80.

Notes: 1805: Purchased farm on Bullpasture River, Highland Co, from John Peoples, Sr.

Cleek shows him listed as the 3rd son of Robert & Jane/Jean, but doesn't give dates for the others, so that could be meaningless.

14. Virginia GWIN (Joseph3, Robert2, (Male)1) was born before 1763 and died before 1817.

Notes: Virginia md. Wm. Stuart. [Cleek, p.97]

1817: Father's will left property to Stuart granddaughters Elibeth, Mary, Margaret, Jean, and Sarah ($5 each), but did not name parents Virginia & Wm Stuart, so I assume both are dead, or maybe just Virginia is dead. Also made provision for Sarah Stuart to live with Joseph's son Moses (Virginia's brother, Sarah's uncle]. Perhaps the other girls are older and are on their own by now.

Morton says Wm md Virginia Gwin & their children were:
Edward m. Christina Callahan 1819
Sarah m. Sinclair Steuart
Jane m. David Bennett
girl m. __ Dickenson
Mary m. John Steuart, 1816
Margaret m. Abraham Carper
girl m. Rev. __

No Bath mrg for David Bennet, a Dickenson & Stuart (found Carper & Bennett in the 1850 census though).

Edward's widow Christina (who was a Sutton, not a Callahan) was b. abt 1779 (per the 1850 census), so Edward was probably born then or earlier. Assuming Virginia was married and at least 16 by 1779, she was born before 1763.

Virginia married William STUART before 1779 in Virginia. William was born before 1760 and died from 1816 to 1817.

Notes: Consented to dau. Mary's marriage in Feb 1816. Not mentioned in father-in-law's 1817 will and his dau. Sarah lives with her uncle Moses Gwin, so I assume Wm is dead.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 38 M    i. Edward STUART was born est 1779 in Virginia (probably Augusta co) and died before 1850.

+ 39 F    ii. Margaret STUART was born about 1801 in Bath Co, Virginia.

+ 40 F    iii. Sarah STUART was born about 1805 in Bath Co, Virginia.

41 F    iv. Elizabeth STUART was born from 1795 to 1805 in Virginia.

+ 42 F    v. Jane Gwin STUART was born about 1805 in Virginia.

+ 43 F    vi. Mary STUART was born from 1790 to 1800 in Virginia.

15. Thomas GWIN (Joseph3, Robert2, (Male)1) was born from 1765 to 1777 in Augusta Co, Virginia 8 and died from Dec 1847 to Jan 1848 in Augusta Co, Virginia at age 81.

Notes: Married April 8, 1800 Elizabeth Lockridge dau. of Samuel & Elizabeth Lockridge, migrated to KY. [Cleek p.96]
-- note that Cleek was talking about Thomas who was supposedly a s/o Robert & Jean (Kincaid) Gwin. Thomas should've married before 1795 when Joseph was born, so I'm not sure what to make of this marriage, which isn't recorded in the usual places in Augusta co as far as I know.

John Clayton. One tract contains an estimated 220 acres; an adjacent tract containing by survey 120 acres that was conveyed to Thos. Guin by his father Joseph Guin, and half another tract granted to Thos. Guin & James Black, currently undivided and surveyed to them by patent dated 22 Nov 1830. [This accounts for all of Thomas's land.]

13 Dec 1849, Wood co VA: Thomas's legacies to his children and granddaughter Margaret Jane Guin were partitioned and purchased (land in Wood co) - see their respective entries. Each child of Thomas received $150 worth of land except granddau. Margaret Jane who got $100 worth of land.

Wiitnesses: John Gone, Cyrus A. McCutchen, Thomas A. Clayton

Will of Thomas Gwin proved in January 1848 court term in Augusta co. Proved by oathes of John Gone and Thomas A. Clayton.

Thomas married Elizabeth A. "Betsy" LOCKRIDGE, daughter of Samuel LOCKRIDGE and Elizabeth (UNKNOWN), in 1790-1795 in Augusta Co, Virginia. Betsy was born from 1779 to 1784 38 and died after Dec 1847.

Notes: Betsey, wife of Thomas Gwynn is mentioned in an 1814 suit over her father's estate; see her father's entry. Although some published sources say she married Thomas son of Robert Gwin & Jean Kincaid, he would have been at least 30 yrs older than she. It makes much more sense that she would marry Thomas son of Joseph, as he would be near her age and his brother Robert married her sister Sarah.

Listed on son Samuel's death cert as E.A. Guinn.

Is this her? Did she move to Wood co after Thomas's death? Their dau. Eliz. was already married to Samuel Swink at this time and I don't know of any other single or widowed Elizabeths, which is the only reason I know she'd buy land alone. My comments in brackets.
18 July 1849, Wood co VA: Deed from Benjamin Willard [the attorney who handled the distribution of lands to the Gwin adult children] to Elizabeth Guin, both of Wood co, for $95, 25 acres on Lees Ck. Bounds mention corner to John & George Wigal, a lot sold to John Wigal, a 40 acre lot sold to Oren Covert [which Covert sold to Thomas A. Guin in May 1849]

The will index at Rootsweb (wood co) shows a will for Elizabeth Guinn in 1850, but a lookup volunteer with a will index shows nothing - need to get will book to find out. Ordered 8/18/2005 at LDS.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 45 M    ii. Samuel GUINN was born about 1803 in Virginia, died on 17 Dec 1865 in Wood Co, West Virginia about age 62, and was buried in Pleasant Hill Cem, Wood Co, West Virginia.

+ 46 M    iii. David GWIN was born about 1808 in Virginia.

+ 47 M    iv. William Lockridge GWIN was born about 1808 in Augusta Co, Virginia and died on 21 Mar 1864 in Wood Co, West Virginia about age 56.

+ 48 F    v. Mary "Polly" GWIN was born about 1815 in Augusta Co, Virginia.

+ 51 F    viii. Margaret GWIN was born from 1795 to 1814 in Augusta Co, Virginia and died before 1848 in Virginia.

+ 52 M    ix. Thomas Armenius GWIN was born about 1823 in Augusta Co, Virginia.

16. Jane GWIN (Joseph3, Robert2, (Male)1) was born before 1774 and died between 1795 and 1817.

Notes: Birthdate assumes she was at least 21 at marriage, since her marriage bond says she was of age.

Not named in father's will in 1817, so perhaps dead.

Jane married John LAW on 15 Dec 1795 in Augusta Co, Virginia.9 John was born before 1774 in Virginia.

Notes: This may be him - Chalkley vol 2, p. 428
Insolvents & Delinquents, 2nd District, Augusta co, 1801 - John Law, deceased
-- On the other hand, there is evidence of John Law in the 1760s in Chalkley too, which may be another generation back from John who md. Jane Gwin

17. James GWIN (Joseph3, Robert2, (Male)1) was born est 1765-1774 in Virginia and died from Feb 1835 to May 1835 in Augusta Co, Virginia about age 69.

Notes: Possible marriage: Augusta co, 13 Jan 1792, James Gwin & Jane Hicklin, d/o John Hicklin, returned 24 Jan 1792 by John Montgomery. [Vogt & Kethley] and [Chalkley vol 2, p.355].
--Cindy Hartman says the James who md. Jane Hicklin lived later in Rockingham and is probably a son of Patrick & Jean Guinn. I wonder though, as the marriage date is about right, and the Montgomerys were neighbors of these Gwins. There is an 1820 John Hicklin will in Bath co listing dau. Jane "Givin" (transcript) and giving James "Givin" all his "wearing clothes". Other children listed: son in law John Steuart, sons William, Thomas, daughters Sally Montgomery, Margaret Miller, Hannah Steuart, Mary Tacket, Elizabeth McCorkle, and the children of Martha Corbit dec'd, James and George Hicklin (possibly sons?), Rachel Wilson "Martha's eldest", bedding to James Steuart.
To me, this suggests that James and Jane Givin/Gwin were still in Augusta co in 1820, long after Cindy's James Guin moved to TN.

[Chalkley vol 2, p.31]
--I think this is this James Gwinn because the others who were adults at this time lived in Bath or Greenbrier.

1810 VA census, Augusta co, p. 345 - the other James Gwins I know of have either moved to Greenbrier long ago or are too old, so I think this must be him; census is in alphabetical order, so can't see neighbors

James's will, Feb 1835, mentioned sons Washington and John, dau. Jane Kinkaid wife of James, and 2 youngest children Martha and Julia. The 1810 census shows 1 more son. John is not in the 1840 Augusta census.

James married (Unknown) (UNKNOWN) before 1798 in (probably) Augusta Co, Virginia. (Unknown) was born before 1779 and died from 1810 to 1835 in Augusta Co, Virginia.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 53 M    i. Joseph GWIN was born from 1794 to 1798 in Augusta or Bath Co, Virginia and died about Oct 1823 in Bath Co, Virginia about age 28.

+ 54 M    ii. Washington GWIN was born about 1806 in Augusta Co, Virginia,43 died on 11 Feb 1868 in , Cass Co, Indiana 43 about age 62, and was buried in Sprinkle Cemetery, Cass Co, Indiana.43

+ 55 F    iii. Mary Jane GWIN was born from 1794 to 1799 in (probably) Augusta Co, Virginia and died before Aug 1838 in Gallia co, Ohio.

56 F    iv. Martha GWIN was born from 1800 to 1810 in Augusta Co, Virginia.

57 M    v. John GWIN was born from 1800 to 1810 in Augusta Co, Virginia.

Notes: 1830 census: There is a John whose last name looks like Gorvin or Gwinn - it's hard to read.

May 1835, Augusta co - John refused to be executor of his father's will; his brother Washington took over as exec'r.

Not in 1840 Augusta census. There is a John Givens age 30-40, 1 fem 20-30, 2 fems under 5.

Noted events in his life were:

• Heir: in his father's will, 21 Feb 1835, Augusta Co, Virginia.

• Court Appearance: May 1835, Augusta Co, Virginia. Refused to be executor of his father's will, so it passed to his brother Washington.

58 F    vi. Julia GWIN was born from 1810 to 1820 in Augusta Co, Virginia.

19. Robert GWIN (Joseph3, Robert2, (Male)1) was born before 1784 in Virginia and died from Oct 1843 to Feb 1844 in Bath Co, Virginia.

Notes: From "History of Coles County, Illinois", in the sketch on John W. Gwin: "The paternal grandfather of our subject, Robert Gwin by name, was a native of Virginia, where he remained during his childhood and youth, and where he was married to Miss Sarah Lockridge, also a native of Virginia. Their 8 children were Joseph, Andrew, Samuel, the only one surviving, Robert, Jane, Margaret, Molly, and William. His first wife died in middle life, and he was then married to Miss Betsey Mc Craig, of Virginia, who became the mother of six children namely Sarah, Renwick, Catherine, David, Blackburn and John. The youngest son and David are the only children living of this marriage. Grandfather died in Virginia in about 1840. His last wife survived him several years."

Father's will left Robert 260 acres near the Warm Springs bought of W. Guthrey, the place he now lives on adjoining James Stuart, and Negro child Eady; to Robert, John, Moses, and William Kinkead joint use of land on Calfpasture Mtn, 428 acres in Pendleton and Bath for use as stock farms.

Not found in Bath, Highland, Greenbrier, Pocahontas, Augusta in 1850 census.

Bath Co Will Book 5 -- I think this is this Robert because the witnesses William K., Moses, and John are all sons of Joseph who presumably live next door to Robert:
Will of Robert Gwin dated Oct 2, 1843, proved Feb 1844
Wit: John C. Marshall, John Gwin, Moses Gwin, William K. Gwin
Intro: "funeral to be conducted in a manner corresponding with my estate and situation in life"
Beq: land in Greenbrier and my share in the Lockridge place on the Big Calfpasture to be sold and the proceeds divided equally between my 1st wife's children and my dau. Margaret's daughter, namely Joseph, Jane, Andrew, Samuel, Polly, William, Robert, and Margaret. Land on Big Sandy and land on Shaw's Fork to be sold and proceeds equally divided between my 2nd wife's children, namely Sarah, Renix, David, Catherine, Blackburn, and John
-beloved wife Betsy - home place & all furnishing; at her death, to be divided between my children Sarah, Catherine, Blackburn, and John
-son Renix: roan filly, new saddle

(Shaw's Fork is a fork of the upper Cowpasture river in Highland Co, VA; it joins the main stem at Liberty, near the Augusta Co border. Gwin Mtn is just to the southeast, then Benson Run. There is a Big Sandy Run in Pocahontas Co on Cochran Ck near Rimel (which is pretty close to the Highland Co lands). There are also Big Sandy creeks or rivers in Kanawha Co east of Charleston, and in Wayne Co and Preston Co, and a Big Sandy River that flows thru present-day Kentucky near the WV border. I don't know which Big Sandy he owned land on.)

Settlement - estate of Robert Gwin - Joseph Gwin, administrator - settled by William H. Terrill - 12 Feb 1846 - no heirs listed

On Nov 2, 1847, in Augusta County, "the Lockridge farm" was sold to Thomas Clayton by Joseph Guin & Mary Jane his wife, Samuel Guin & Elizabeth his wife, and Margaret Guin of Augusta county, David Guin & Jane his wife of Wood county, and Andrew Guin & Polly Guin of Highland county. The Guins released their interest in "the undivided one fourteenth part of the Lockridge farm on the waters of the great Calf Pasture adjoining the lands of Thomas Mongomery, Samuel Blackburn, and others" for one dollar. Clerks statements filed in Highland co for "Mary" [Polly] Guin on 11 Dec 1848; in Wood co for David & Jane Guin, no date; in Augusta co for Joseph and Samuel Guin and their wives Mary Jane and Elizabeth on 10 Feb 1849; no acknowledgements filed for Andrew or Margaret.
--Note that Wm and Robert are missing from this sale, but they sold their shares later. Note that David & Jane Gwin in this sale is Robert's daughter Jane and her husband David Gwin. (Robert's son David Gwin didn't inherit a share of the Lockridge place, so this is not him with some other Jane.]

Nov 1849: William Guin "of Tipacanoe Co, Indiana" sold his one eighth share of the one fourteenth part of the Lockridge place to Thomas Clayton [get details from laptop].

June 1852: Robert J. Gwin of Gallia Co, Ohio sold his share of the Lockridge farm to Thomas Clayton (see his entry); the deed specifies that his share was inherited from his mother's share of the farm.

1850 VA, Highland Co census, p.109 or 110, #586
Renick Gwin 33 b. Bath, no occupation listed, r.e. value: 100
Polly 38 b. Bath, as were rest of people except where noted
Catharine 28
William 15
Morgan 12
Charles R. 9
Sarah J. 2 b. Highland
Blackburn 23 b. Bath
--I believe Renick, Polly, Catharine, and Blackburn are the children of Robert, living on Robert's old place. Mother Betsy must've died or remarried. The younger children (see their entries) appear to be illegitimate children of Mary/Polly. This is 10 houses before Robert's brothers John, Moses, and Wm, who he is supposed to live near per his father's will. Also, James Stuart lives 2 farms away at #588; his land adjoined the land that Robert lived on, willed to Robert by Joseph.

Working backwards, it looks like Robert must've married his 2nd wife Betsy between Polly and Renick, that is between 1812 and 1817. And to have 7 or 8 kids before 1812, he must've first married before 1804. Which means he was probably born before 1784.

2nd marriage record: Robert Guin & Elizabeth McCray, 8 Feb 1816, Pendleton Co, VA. This is from a transcription; I need to see the original to see if "aig" looked like "ay" to the transcriber.

12 May 1845, recorded Nov 1860 - Joseph Gwin, executor of Robert Gwin, sold land to Benjamin Thompson - Robert had sold land to Thompson in 1840 on Cowardins Big Spring, a branch of Jacksons River in the Warm Springs Valley on the line of Thomas Adams dec'd and on the side of W.S. Mountain, being 260 acres that was devised to Robert by his father Joseph Gwin dec'd, and said land was never conveyed to Thompson. Joseph's statement filed in Augusta co. [Bath Co Deed Bk 12, p.175]

-------------
I searched the KY land grants database at ancestry.com for "Big Sandy" and got lots of hits but no Guins of any spelling. There was a Robert Guinn who got land in Clinton Co KY in 1836, but the 1840 Clinton census (GenWeb) shows a Robert 20-30 with a couple of small children and other Gwinns nearby, so this is probably not him.

Possibility for Robert's Greenbrier land:
30 July 1799, Robert Gwin, Greenbrier county - 30 acres on the waters of Pollie's Creek a branch of Greenbrier River adjoining the land of James Gwin & Bailey Wood; LOTW 12935 issued 13 July 1782. [Lib. of VA database, Grants 42, p. 485]
-- need to get grantor index to see when this land got sold and who sold it

Robert married Sarah "Sally" LOCKRIDGE, daughter of Samuel LOCKRIDGE and Elizabeth (UNKNOWN), about 1800 in Augusta or Bath Co, Virginia. Sally was born before 1788 in Virginia (probably Augusta co) and died from Aug 1815 to Jan 1816 in Augusta or Bath Co, Virginia.

Notes: How do we know Robert's wife's name?
1) Death record of son Joseph names parents Robert & Sarah.
2) History of Coles Co, IL (see Robert's entry)
3) Suit over father's land names dau. Sally "wife of Robert Gwynn" and timeframe is right for it to be this Robert.
4) Her children inherited her 1/14th share of the Lockridge farm. Samuel left his farm to his 14 children. What are the odds there would be 2 Samuels with 14 children in the right timeframe?

Children from this marriage were:

+ 59 M    i. Joseph GWIN was born from 1800 to 1804 in Augusta Co, Virginia and died on 20 Nov 1875 in Augusta Co, Virginia 44 at age 74.

Robert next married Betsy McCRAIG (probably) 8 Feb 1816 in Pendleton Co, Virginia. Betsy was born before 1800 in Virginia and died between Oct 1843 and 1847 in Highland Co, Virginia.59

Notes: See husband's entry for surname explanation. We know she was Betsy from his will. Son John's bio says she died before he was 20 (May 1847).

Children from this marriage were:

67 F    i. Sarah GWIN was born about 1816 in Bath Co, Virginia and died before 1887.46

Notes: No marriage bond in Bath Co to 1853.

Noted events in her life were:

20. John C. GWIN (Joseph3, Robert2, (Male)1) was born about 1786 in Bath Co, Virginia and died on 17 May 1861 in Highland Co, Virginia 10 about age 75.

Notes: Married Mary (Pickens) Callahan, widow of Wm Callahan. [Cleek, p.96] No marriage bond for this John in Bath Co and Mary doesn't match wife's name of Rachel in 1850 census. Cleek may be wrong, or John may have married twice. Elsewhere, Cleek has a John Givens married to Rachel Pickens, so perhaps this John's wife really is a Pickens. If she's his first wife, they were married before about 1813. Morton's history of Highland Co says merely that John married a Pickens.

William CALLAHAN and Mary PICKENS were married, 3 Feb. 1812, at Pendleton Co., Virginia, by Otho WADE. [Pendleton Co marriages, from Bird page vol 5 on Bath Co page)

Tried John/Rachel/Rachael search at ancestry.com VA marriages database for surrounding counties; no luck.

From THE JOHN PICKENS FAMILY, Combined Editiion (Baltimore, Gateway Press,
1981), p. 21: "Alexander PICKENS lived in Highland Co., SC.*** ... His home was
at the foot of a mountain, one mile south of McD., and his spring is still
called by his name. At this place ... Rachel [PICKENS] (married John GIVEN,
1811) and Mary (married William CALLAHAN 1812 and then married John
GIVEN)..[SOURCE] History of Highland Co., VA"
*** NOTE this is an obvious typo. she goes on to give the source as
History of Highland Co., VA. There is no Highland County in either North or
South Carolina. I suspect Rachel actually married John Gwin and her sister Mary married John Given and they were 2 separate people...

In father Joseph's will, he left son John "the land he lives on adjoining Hambleton Benson"; to Robert, John, Moses, and William Kinkead joint use of land on Calfpasture Mtn, 428 acres in Pendleton and Bath for use as stock farms

Her parents are listed on her death record as T. & J. Kincaid, but I looks like J in old handwriting.

Note that her brother Andrew Kincaid married her husband's sister Elizabeth Gwin [Cleek, p.97) and her brother Thomas married her husband's cousin(?) Sarah Gwin.

Noted events in her life were:

• Census: FROM 1850 TO 1860, Highland Co, Virginia.

The child from this marriage was:

+ 77 M    i. William A.B. GWIN was born about 1822 in Bath Co, Virginia and died on 17 May 1882 in Cowpasture river, Highland Co, Virginia 76 about age 60.

22. William Kinkead GWIN (Joseph3, Robert2, (Male)1) was born about 1795 in Bath Co, Virginia and died on 29 Sep 1860 in Highland Co, Virginia 15 about age 65.

Notes: Father's will left son William Kinkead the land between John's and Robert's [whose land adjoins Hamilton Benson and James Stuart], Negro girl Kate, horses, planks for house siding, gun, 3 cattle; to Robert, John, Moses, and William Kinkead joint use of land on Calfpasture Mtn, 428 acres in Pendleton and Bath for use as stock farms. Wm Kinkead also gets land on Mill Creek purchased of Thomas Edins.

Married Jane Kincaid in 1823. [Cleek, p.102]

10 June 1842: Wm. K. Gwin, 81 acres in Bath co on the east side of the Cowpasture river above his house on the Meadow run. [LVA land grants, Gwin, card 74]

Noted events in his life were:

• Census: FROM 1850 TO 1860, Highland Co, Virginia.

William married Jane KINCAID on 11 Nov 1823 in Bath Co, Virginia.16 Jane was born from 1800 to 1807 in Bath Co, Virginia and died on 18 Feb 1885 in Cowpasture river, Highland Co, Virginia 78 at age 84.

The child from this marriage was:

+ 78 F    i. Rachel GWIN was born about 1826 in Bath Co, Virginia and died on 16 Jan 1887 in Cowpasture river, Highland Co, Virginia 79 about age 61.

23. Elizabeth GWIN (Joseph3, Robert2, (Male)1) was born before 1796 and died between 1835 and 1850 in Virginia.

Notes: Elizabeth m. Andrew Kincaid, son of Thomas Kincaid and Isabell Kincaid Kincaid, on Jan 17, 1812 in Bath Co. [Cleek, p.97]

Birthdate assumes she was at least 16 at marriage.

Named Elibeth in father's will. Transcription in Bath Co Wills & Inventories says "daughters Elisabeth and Andrea K" but the original says "daughter Elizabeth and Andrew Kinkead".

Not in 1850 Highland Co with presumed husband.

Elizabeth married Andrew KINCAID, son of Thomas KINCAID and Isabel KINCAID, on 7 Jan 1812 in Bath Co, Virginia.17 Andrew was born about 1786 and died after 1860.

Notes: Elizabeth Gwin (dau. of Joseph) md. on Jan 7, 1812 in Bath Co to Andrew Kincaid, son of Thomas and Isabell (nee Kincaid) Kincaid. [Cleek, p.97]

1850 Highland Co census shows Andrew Kincaid, age 64, living alone in the cluster of Kincaids that immediately follow Elizabeth's uncle Gwins, so I think this is him, widowed.

24. Joseph GWIN (Joseph3, Robert2, (Male)1) was born est 1792-1795 in Augusta Co, Virginia and died from Nov to Dec 1848 in Augusta Co, Virginia.

Notes: 1813 Dec 25: Joseph received land from his parents Joseph & Mary, in Augusta co, per the grantor's index. I have the 2 similar deeds for his brothers James & Thomas on the same date, but don't know how much land this Joseph received. This probably indicates that he was 16-21 at the time, or born between 1792 and 1797. Should check the Augusta tax lists to see when he appears.

1817: Father Joseph's will left son Joseph "my part of the land in Augusta Co lying on "Wakers" [Walkers] Mtn.

Apparently Joseph went to Indiana and bought land, which he later left to his children:
1831 Jan 3: Joseph Guin of Augusta Co, VA patented in Tippecanoe Co, Indiana:
80 acres (W half of NE qtr) in Sec 23 Twp 21-N Range 4-W, patent #12169

80 acres (E half of NW qtr) in Sec 22 Twp 21-N Range 4-W, #12172
Need to check Tippe. deeds to see what became of the first parcel and the portions of the other parcels that are not mentioned in his will.

Bounds mention over the mtn, east side of the mtn, and Kincaids. [Augusta Deed Book 71, p.402]
-- note the patent was actually granted to Joseph's father Joseph, unless this is a different piece of land on Walker's Mtn than the one he inherited..

Joseph Gwin

Joseph married (unknown) before 1815 in (probably) Augusta Co, Virginia. (unknown) was born est 1795 and died from 1840 to 1848 about age 45.

Notes: Apparently still alive in 1840 census, as there is a female age 50-60 with Joseph.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 79 F    i. Eleanor Tate GUINN was born about 1815 in Augusta Co, Virginia.

+ 80 M    ii. William H. GUINN was born on 20 Jun 1818 in Virginia (probably Augusta co),81 died on 1 Sep 1864 in Tippecanoe Co, Indiana 82 at age 46, and was buried in Concord Cem, Lauramie Twp, Tippecanoe Co, Indiana.

+ 81 F    iii. Jane GUINN was born in 1818 in (probably) Augusta Co, Virginia, died in 1877 in Tippecanoe Co, Indiana 84 at age 59, and was buried in Concord Cem, Lauramie Twp, Tippecanoe Co, Indiana.

+ 82 M    iv. Robert R. GUINN was born from 1824 to 1825 in Virginia.

+ 83 F    v. Martha GUINN was born on 15 Feb 1827 in (probably) Augusta Co, Virginia,81 died on 9 Jun 1867 in Tippecanoe Co, Indiana 86 at age 40, and was buried in Concord Cem, Lauramie Twp, Tippecanoe Co, Indiana.

25. Agness\Nancy GWIN (David3, Robert2, (Male)1) was born on 18 Aug 1770 and died between Jul 1845 and Mar 1846 in Bath Co, Virginia about age 74.

Notes: Married Hugh McLaughlin. [Morton's History of Highland Co.]

Birth & marriage date of Jan 1794 to Hugh & Hugh's death dates. [Carol Watson's Carlile bk, p.19]

Birth & marriage of 18 Aug 1789 to Hugh in [Abstracts of Rev. War Pension Files]. Says she was later married to James Wiley "on the farm of her father where she was born & the said James Wiley d Jul 14 1838, in 1845 a daughter Jane Kirkpatrick rec'd land from the state of VA, wid appl Jul 7, 1845 in Bath Co VA".

1810 Feb 13: Marriage bond for James Wiley and Nancy McGloughlin. Surety, Robert Kirkpatrick. David Gwin consents for dau. Nancy. Witness, Robert Kirkpatrick. No return filed. [Bath Co Marriages, p.38]

1820 Apr 18: Father David Gwin's will names her as Nancy Wiley wife of James Wiley. [see father's entry for will]. Based on James Wiley's will in 1838, Nancy & James' children together were Sally and Esther, so James' other children were probably from his first wife Agnes Crawford.

1838: Named Agness in husband's will. Referred to as Nancy Wiley - widow - in husband's estate sale. [Bath Co Wills & Inventories p.187, 192]

1840 Aug: Settlement of husband's estate records payment to Agnes Wiley for boarding field hands who saved crops. [Bath Co Wills & Inventories p.200]

1845: Applied for husband's war pension; see above.

1846 Mar 18: Inventory of the estate of Nancy Wiley, dec'd, by Adam Stephenson, admin. [Bath Co Will Bk 5, p.160]
p.162 Estate sold March 19. Buyers included Robert Wiley, John Wiley, David Lockridge, Adam Stephenson, John McGloughlin, Elizabeth Greene, Esther Wiley (4 small mugs), David Gwin son of John, David Gwin son of Robt, David Stephenson, Washington Stephenson, Houston Gwin, Logan Gwin...she had lots of stuff to sell, must have been relatively wealthy.

1850 Jun 12: Estate settlement of Nannie Wiley; Adam Stephenson, admin. Payments to: William W. Fleming, James G. Paxton, John Gwin, James B. Campbell, Andrew Lockridge, John McGloughlin, David Fultz, John Cleek, James Brown, B.F. Hixon, Ewin Dever, David Stephenson, Jacob C. Doyle, David G. Kincaid, Samuel Hiner, Huston F. Gwin, John Wiley, John Cleek Jr.

The Hugh McLaughlins are very confusing. It looks like 2 Hughs married 2 Nancy Gwins at least 15 yrs apart. First, Nancy Gwin, a dau. of David Gwin, married some McLaughlin who apparently died before Nancy was 21, since her father consented to her 2nd marriage - but that's odd, as she was married to Hugh for about 9 years, so maybe David didn't have to consent but did it to show he supported the marriage? She then married James Wiley. I don't think she married Squire Hugh because Price and perhaps other sources say Squire Hugh had a 2nd wife Elizabeth Lightner Gum (widow of Otho Gum), so presumably his first wife Nancy Gwin died first, so she can't be this Nancy. On the other hand, James Wiley was a witness to the marriage of Squire Hugh's sister Nancy to Jacob Cassel, intimating a close family or friend connection. See the entries of Squire Hugh and James Wiley for other info. Bath Co Marriages p.66 says Hugh McGloughlin married Nancy M.C. Gwin in Dec 1825; surety, John Gwin. I think this is Squire Hugh.

Agness\Nancy married Hugh McLAUGHLIN (a tailor) on 18 Aug 1789 in Pendleton Co., Virginia. Hugh was born est 1760-1770 and died on 5 Jun 1798 in Bath Co, Virginia 87 about age 37.

Notes: Married Jan 1794, died in 1807. [Cleek p.102 and Carol Watson's Carlile bk, p.19] -- conflicts with Rev. War Pension File death date, so is this data for another Hugh?

Hugh McGloughlin, VA Line, sol enl in Augusta Co VA, sol m Agnes (also called Ann, Nanny & Nancy) the daughter of David Gwinn or Gwin on Aug 18 1789 in Pendleton Co VA & she was b Aug 18 1770, sol d Jun 5 1798 in Bath Co VA & his wid m 2nd to James Wiley in 1810 on the farm of her father where she was born & the said James Wiley d Jul 14 1838, in 1845 a daughter Jane Kirkpatrick rec'd land from the state of VA, wid appl Jul 7, 1845 in Bath Co VA. [Abstracts of Rev. War Pension Files]

Estate of Hugh McGloughlen inventoried 15 Oct 1798 by James Hamilton, Otha Wade, and John Bird. 10 cattle, 4 horses, furniture, kitchen uensils, Taylor tools and toos for dressing skins, farm implements. [BCWI p.16, Will Bk 1 p.125]
-- note the "taylor tools" - I think this means he is the first Hugh in the tax lists of Bath co:
18 Jul 1791: McGlouhlin, Hugh (Taylor), 1 tithe, 2 horses
18 Jul 1791: McGlouhlin, James, 1 tithe, 6 horses
18 Jul 1791: McGlouhlin, Daniel, 1 tithe, 6 horses
24 July l791: McGlouhlin, Hugh, 1 tithe, 1 horse
-- Hugh is likely related to James & Daniel since they live close together.

From the pension app of his wife:
"He was taken prisoner at Charleston when that city was captured by the British and was detained in prison for a year or two, and that while he was a prisoner, he learned the tailoring trade".

Don't know if this is this Hugh...the Hugh below would be born abt 1758, which would make him 36 when he married and 49 at death:
1772 March 17, Augusta Co: Hugh McGlaughlin, orphan of Hugh McGaughlin, aged 14, to be bound to John Hogshead, he teaching him the trade of a currier, farmer and shoemaker. [Chalkley, vol 1, p.166]

Also this:
MARCH 19, 1773: Hugh McGlauchlin having run away, his children, Jane and William, to be bound out. [Chalkley vol 1, p.170] -- this is probably not the same Hugh as the 14-yr-old, but it could be his father, although would they use the term "orphan" above if the father ran away? Might this mean Jane, Wm, and Hugh b. abt 1758 are siblings?

The child from this marriage was:

+ 84 F    i. Jane McLAUGHLIN was born in Nov 1794 in Bath Co, Virginia.88

Agness\Nancy next married James WILEY, son of Robert WILEY, on 13 Feb 1810 in Bath Co, Virginia. James was born before 1782 and died on 14 Jul 1838 in Bath Co, Virginia.

Notes: LINK TO FATHER IS TENTATIVE. Robert did have a son James, per his will, and this James was born in the right time period and seems to be the only one around then.

1838 Feb 19: Will written, witnessed by Stephen Wanless and W. Wilson. To wife Agness land on Jackson River; to sons John & Robert land on Jackson River plus joint interest in 100 acres on Alleghany Mtn near head of Meadow Ck, with heirs of Wm. Corbit; names dau. Esther (later revealed to be "idiot"], Sally Hamilton, son-in-law Mustoe Hamilton, dau. Elizabeth Potts and Agness McGlaughlin. Sally & Ester are legatees of David Gwin. Probated August 1838. [Bath Co Will Bk 4, p.418]
--Tracing back to the will of David Gwin, we find that wife Agness is Nancy, the dau. of David Gwin who d. 1822 in Bath Co.

Died July 14, 1838 per wife's application for his Rev. War pension (see her entry).

Estate inventoried Aug 29, 1838 by John Cleek, Jr., executor, Robert McGuffin, Stephen Wandless, John Chestnut, Chambers Mustoe

Estate sold Aug 30, 1838; buyers include "Nancy Wiley - widow", John & Robert Wiley, Mustoe Hamilton, Samuel & James McGloughlin, David Stephenson, Davis Hamilton, David & Andrew & Washington Lockridge, Mustoe B. Given.

Estate settlement Aug 1840 included payment to Agnes Wiley for boarding hands engaged in saving crops.

Probable brother: Sarah Benson m. William Wiley in 1799 [Morton] -- she is a sister of Mathias Benson who appears on various Wiley marriage bonds.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 85 F    i. Sarah "Sally" Alexander WILEY was born on 14 Nov 1811 in Bath Co, Virginia 90 and died on 20 Jan 1897 at age 85.

86 F    ii. Esther WILEY was born about 1810 in Bath Co, Virginia.

Notes: Birthdate from 1850 census.

1826 Feb 14: Bond by James Wiley, Thomas Sitlington, Robert McClintic for $6000 for Wiley to receive a legacy to his children Acy and Sally.

1827 Feb 10: Settlement of estate of David Gwin; payment to James Wiley, guardian of Easy and Sally.

1838 Feb 19: Named in father's will as legatee of David Gwin, so must be a dau. of Nancy Gwin Wiley.

1838 Aug 14: Bond filed by John Cleek, Jr., Robert McClintic, and Samuel Kirkpatrick for $4000 for Cleek's service as guardian of Esther Wiley, an idiot.

1850 census: Lives with brother John, is marked as idiot.
