--John Clayton's Thomas is only 3 yrs old at this time, so who can this be?

Descendants can join DAR.

Note that this is neither the John Clayton who was a famous botanist (ca 1685-1773) nor his father the attorney general of Colonial Williamsburg, nor the minister of Williamsburg in the 1680s.

CENSUS: Not listed in Augusta Co in 1782-90 census composed of tax rolls, at Nat'l Archives (Bath was part of Augusta til 1791).

Some events in his life were:

• Lived: Between 1785-1824, Marble Valley, near Deerfield, Augusta Co, Virginia.

John married Margaret WANLESS , daughter of Ralph(?) WANLESS and Margaret (UNKNOWN) , 20 Dec 1785 or 2 Jan 1786 in Augusta Co, Virginia.2 Margaret was born about 1759 in England, died on 30 Nov 1823 in Augusta Co, Virginia 3, and was buried in Rocky Springs Ch., Deerfield, Augusta Co, Virginia.

Read about Margaret's ancestry, family, and prior marriage to Mr. Rice.

Notes: Chalkley (vol I, p.244] says Rev. Samuel Shannon, Presbyterian, was granted a license to perform matrimony on Dec 20, 1785 by Augusta Co Court. So if he married them, they were one of his first marriages!

Birthdate issues: Tombstone data from Craig book says she died on 11/30/1823 and was 64, making her birthyear 1759 plus or minus one year. Dunlap says tombstone age was 70 -- don't know who is right here, as the tombstone was sunk too far in the ground to read when I saw it in 1992 - so he figured only that she must have been born after 1751, as she filed a suit 70 yrs later in 1821.

No Margaret b. to Ralph in IGI in right timeframe.

Notes: Invalid with T.B. for 14 yrs. Married her 1st cousin William Clayton. After her death, he married her sister Nancy.

In 1821 wrote letter to brother in law & cousin Ralph Clayton, referring to "Aunt Molly Gwinn" -- wonder who that was? Also, in dau. Margaret's letter telling of her mother's death in 1841, Margaret says "her obituary was in the Methodist newspapers in MO". [L. Craig]

In 1812, started his own tannery in his old home in Augusta Co and stayed for 7 yrs before leaving for MO in 1818. Came to MO with Col. Wm. --Note her mother Sarah died in Jan or Jun 1852.

Obit in Staunton Spectator (online at Valley of Shadow), December 25, 1860: "Died: On the 3rd of Nov, at her residence on the Calf Pasture river, Mrs. Nancy G. Clayton, wife of Mr. Thomas Clayton, aged 61 yrs and 3 mos. Mrs. C. has left a husband and a large family to mourn their loss. It may indeed be said of her that she was the affectionate wife, the tender mother, and the sincere friend - discharging with fidelity all the retiring duties of her station, she found her highest enjoyment in the bosom of her own home. Mrs. C was much respected by a large circle of acquaintances to whom she had endeared herself by her gentle and unassuming conduct, who sympathize with those bereaved by this stroke of an all-wise and overruling Providence. To those distressed, or in want, she was ever ready to extend relief without ostenistion (?).
Mrs C had for many years been a consistent member of the Presbyterian Church of Rocky Spring. Her las illness she bore with calm submission to the will of the great Disposer of all events. Her faith was strong in the Redeemer of Sinners. Her hope was bright and to the soul an anchor sure and steadfast. Her end was peace. Now in the confident belief that their loss is her gain; that the crown promised to those who love the Savior has been given to her; and that she has exchanged this sorrowing dark world for a brighter abode, the deeply afflicted relatives will find their holiest consolation."

Died 5 days before son Ralph d. at age 19, and her obit is just below his, on page 3 , column 2.
